Official information from the body responsible for public libraries
in Dublin. Includes branch information, and details of services offered
to customers. Also includes details of Dublin Public Library

The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites
and other cultural artefacts in digital form. Like a paper library, it
offers free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general
public.

The IPL is a public library of and for the Internet community. It
aims to teach about the issues involved in the translation of the
library perspective into a networked environment, and to provide
services and information which enhance the value of the Internet to its
users.

A report to Government with proposals for the successful
implementation of the People’s Network scheme. Chapters include
recommendations on eligibility criteria, priorities for funding,
administering awards, delivering content to users, the funding model,
advanced training, the school library service, network options, funding
and financial assessment, and implementation aspects. Also includes
reviews of current activity in the public library, archive, museum and
gallery, and higher education sectors, intellectual property issues,
training needs analysis, network service and design specification, usage
proposals and ICT cost assumptions. All chapters are available in HTML
or PDF format.

Subscription library, founded in 1841, which serves the needs of
scholars by lending books for use at home. Contains about a million
books in all European languages and a subject range across the
humanities, with particular emphasis on literature, history, and related
subjects. Offers information on library history, news, membership, and
services.
027.4 Net Notions for Librarians: Bright Ideas and Resources for Public
Libraries
Net Notions aims to describe ways in which public libraries can use
the Internet to serve its users. The focus is on the UK but is
illustrated with real examples from around the world.
027.4 New Library: The People’s Network
A report commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
which discusses the challenge created by information and communication
technologies for public libraries. It argues for the transformation of
libraries and what they do and also makes the case for re-equipping them
and re-skilling their staff so that they can continue to fulfil their
widely valued role as intermediary, guide, interpreter, and referral
point.

The NYPL is one of the largest public libraries in the world. Site
includes information on the library, its branches and services.
027.4 Open Learning and the Internet in Public Libraries
Report on the findings of a project to demonstrate how open learning
materials available on the Internet could be integrated with the
provision of local open learning resources to provide an enhanced
learning environment in the public library.
027.4 PLUS: Public Libraries Using Spanish
Collection of language materials for use in public libraries
frequented by Spanish speakers. Includes Spanish versions of patron
services such as library card application forms and policy statements,
media resources such as newspaper articles about library services, and a
guide to Dewey Decimal Classification.

A tool which can be used to uncover data about public libraries
throughout the US. On entering address details, information about
organisational characteristics, paid full time staff, operating income
and expenditures, size of library collection, and library services is
returned.

The aims of the Focus were to contribute to strategic,
policy-making, awareness raising and development activities in the area
of public library networking and lifelong learning.
027.4 Revision of IFLA’s Guidelines for Public Libraries
Pre-print circulated for comment prior to the official publication
of IFLA’s guidelines scheduled for the end of the year 2000. Presented
as six chapters, issues addressed include the role and purpose of the
public library, the legal and financial framework, meeting user needs,
collection development, human resources, and management and marketing.

Report and proceedings of the committees investigation of the public
library system in the UK. Addresses topics such as monitoring and
maintaining library standards, the role of public libraries, access to
public libraries, IT provision, and funding issues.

Regularly maintained index of public libraries on the web. Good
examples of sites are highlighted.
027.4 Vancouver Public Library
Offers information about collections, services and borrowing, and
library events. Also provides access to the Library’s catalogue,
strategic plan, mission, budget, and annual report.
027.4 Will Libraries Survive?
Article considering the historical use of public libraries in the
US, and whether the increasing availability of networked computers will
diminish the public library’s traditional role still further. It asserts
that the book will remain the primary form for reading works which are
at the center of cultural life and which make up the core of public
library collections.
